Location in Marchmont, south Edinburgh

To reach Marchmont from the airport

Airlink Buses run frequently between the airport and the city centre, cost about £4.50 1 way, £6 or £7 return. You can get bus 41 (£1.50 single) to Marchmont (walk up the hill along Market Street to the Mound after getting off the airport bus at the terminal at Waverley Station) or a taxi (costs between £5 and £10 depending on time of day). The tram also travels to Princes Street where you can get a taxi or the no 41 bus to Marchmont.

We can recommend pre-booking a taxi with Midlothian Taxi Hire, which a cost effective option (as well as time effective!) for groups of four or more. The "airport greet" service includes waiting with a name board at the arrivals area, and transfer to the flat. For the "airport pick-up" service, the taxi waits just outside the airport perimeter until you call to let them know you have picked up your bags and they come to the pre-booked taxi rank just outside the terminal a couple of minutes later, and transfer to the flat. Please contact Midlothian Taxi Hire directly regarding availability and booking: +44 (0)131 440 2985, email: info@midlothiantaxihire.com

An airport taxi from the rank can also be a cost-effective option for a group to travel between the airport and city, and is also quicker to get to the flat than by tram or bus. It has the advantage that it does not need to be pre-booked, though you will queue with others at the airport and can take a little while at busy times.

To reach Marchmont by bus or train

Buses serve Marchmont frequently from the city centre. Bus no 41 stops on Warrender Park Road going to Princes Street via the Mound, or south to the university (Kings Buildings). Bus no. 24 stops on Marchmont Road, heading towards the West End via Lothian Road or to the New Royal Infirmary on the A7. Bus no 5 stops on Grange Road, heading towards London Road and the top of Leith Walk, or to Morningside. Many other buses stop nearby on Nicholson Street/Clerk Street and Lothian Road/Bruntsfield Place. See Lothian Buses Route Map here (we are close to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children marked on the bus map, zoom in by moving the zoom level red marker on the left side). Adult Bus tickets cost £1.20 for a single or £3 for a day ticket valid on all lothian buses.

From Waverley Train Station, bus no 41 heading to Marchmont stops on Waverley Bridge, just outside the road entrance into the station, opposite the airport bus terminal. Alternatively, a taxi can be found at the rank inside the station or walking takes about half an hour.

From Haymarket Train Station, there are no direct buses, so a taxi from the rank outside the station is the best option. Or walking takes about half an hour.

From the south - follow either the A7, A701 or A702 into Edinburgh off the by-pass.

On the A7 or A701 continue into Edinburgh until you reach signposts for the A700 (Melville Drive) and directions to the west. On Melville Drive, head west until the 3rd traffic lights, where you turn left into Argyle Place (signposted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

For Roseneath Apartment: In Argyle Place, turn second right, just before the Bicycle Works into Roseneath Terrace. At the end, turn left into the one way street, Roseneath Place.

For Gladstone Apartment - continue in Argyle Place to the crossroads and turn Left into Warrender Park Road/Sciennes Road, go past the Sick Kids hospital on your left, then 2nd Left into Gladstone Terrace. There is Zone 7 pay and display parking in the street, for up to 6 hours.

Melville Drive, approaching the junction with Argyle Place Argyle Place, from Melville Drive. Turn Right at the Bicycle Works. Further up the street are several fresh grocery shops, an organic delicatessen, Thai restaurant, and the Argyle Pub/Hide Bar.

On the A702 to Roseneath Apartment: continue straight on through Morningside and Bruntsfield heading towards Edinburgh city centre. Turn right into Whitehouse Loan (first Right after you have reached Bruntsfield Links, after the Bruntsfield Links hotel on your left), then after the pedestrian crossing turn second left (the first left is one way no-entry) into Warrender Park Road. At Marchmont Road, either cross over and continue as far as the road block and drive into/park in Marchmont Crescent, parallel to Roseneath Place, or turn Left into Marchmont Road and then first Right into Meadow Place, and immediately second right (ie the narrow street just after a wall separating it from Marchmont Crescent) to drive up Roseneath Place.

To get to Gladstone Apartment from the A702, go through Morningside and up the hill, continue straight on past Morrisons supermarket and Newbattle Terrace on the right side, then at the traffic lights near the top of the hill, turn Right into Church Hill, then left and first right into Strathearn place, continue straight on through two crossroads with traffic lights (the road becomes Grange Road) then 5th on left into Tantallon Place. At the end turn right into Sciennes Road and first left into Gladstone Terrace.

If you are approaching from the West or North and do not know Edinburgh, it is much easier to continue along the bypass and enter from the South along the A702 (at the Hillend exit) as described above. Much of the city centre and periphery is currently disrupted by long-term road works to install the tram system.

From the East/A1 either take the bypass and enter Edinburgh by the A7 as described above, or continue on the A1 into Edinburgh. Continue on the A1 turning Left at the traffic lights after the dual carriage way ends (Milton Road, still the A1) and continue on this road through various roundabouts and traffic lights. Soon after the road narrows to single carriage way each way, and after a right hand bend in the road, turn Left at the traffic lights into Duddingston Road West, heading towards Duddingston and Holyrood Park. (if you reach the a petrol garage (Esso?)on your left you've gone through the junction where you should have turned left). Shortly after, On a left hand bend, turn right into a narrow cobbled street through Duddingston and Holyrood Park (road is closed on Sundays). Continue through the park and turn left at the roundabout to go towards south Edinburgh. At the traffic lights at the T-junction by the commonwealth pool turn Right onto the A7 and first left into East Preston Street, then straight across the traffic lights at Nicholson Street into Hope Street, then straight across the traffic lights into Melville Drive. Follow directions thereafter as above for entry from south (A7/A701).

Access live travel reports if you are driving here - find out what the traffic is like on your route, especially if you are driving up from England, from Frixo. Its free, and you can also access it from your mobile phone.
